Algebra 1
Prerequisite: Pre-Algebra

The main goal of Algebra is to develop fluency in working with linear equations.
Students will extend their experiences with tables, graphs, and equations and solve linear
equations and inequalities and systems of linear equations and inequalities. Students will
extend their knowledge of the number system to include irrational numbers. Students
will generate equivalent expressions and use formulas. Students will simplify
polynomials and begin to study quadratic relationships. Students will use technology and
models to investigate and explore mathematical ideas and relationships and develop
multiple strategies for analyzing complex situations. Students will analyze situations
verbally, numerically, graphically, and symbolically. Students will apply mathematical
skills and make meaningful connections to life’s experiences.


Welcome to North Davis Jr. High. I’m excited to get to know you and to share the coolness of Math. I am excited to teach this class and hope you are excited about excelling in math. I am ready to do my job; you are expected to be ready to do yours. The following information will help you understand important parts of this math class.

Stuff you need in class EVERYDAY

Paper: because you need to be write and be able to hand it in.
Pencils: NO CREDIT WILL BE GIVEN FOR ASSIGNMENTS/TESTS/ETC. IN PEN.
Planner: to record homework, contains school/district policies, etc.
Calculator: It should have trigonometric functions and a square root function.
Classroom Expectations
Ø Follow directions when they are given. When given a choice, make it within 10 seconds.
Ø Be in the room, quickly moving to your seat when the bell finishes. Otherwise, you are tardy.
Ø Stay in your assigned seat unless you have permission to leave it.
Ø No gum, candy, food, or drink in the classroom. You may have a water bottle. Any abuse of this privilege will, of course, end the privilege.
Ø Students are allowed 3 hallpasses per term for emergencies (not for drinks). See water bottles above.
Ø All talking should be quiet and pertain to your work, and happen only at appropriate times.
Ø Teacher dismisses class.
Ø A student, who is disruptive repeatedly, e.g. 2 days in a row, will be removed from class to allow instruction to continue. The student will be responsible for correcting, scoring, and turning in anything that may have been corrected.
You must do your part as a member of this class to assure the best learning environment. If there is a problem, you are expected to solve it. If that doesn’t happen, I will solve it.

This is math class. You need to do the math to earn the grade. Figuring grades by adding up earned points will not always work because assignments may be weighted differently depending on what it is.
Citizenship
Based on behavior, preparation, and participation which are indicators of attitude. Also, per district policy: 3 tardies is an “N,” 4 is a “U,” and any truancy will result in a “U.” An “H” must be earned with outstanding attendance, work and participation and conduct. Coming 3 times unprepared will result in a “U.”
H=Honors, G=Good, S=Satisfactory, N=Needs Improvement, U=Unsatisfactory
Assignments
Although there are many ways, sometimes, to do a certain problem, it is most beneficial to the student to take notes , participate and use the methods learned in class. This provides continuity for the student and helps with learning and retention. There will be time to ask questions for every assignment. As with tests and anything else, NO WORK = NO CREDIT. When you are published in a respected mathematics journal, we can talk about not showing work. A complete assignment will include: first and last name, date assigned, page and problems, the original problem, all steps written and a circled or boxed answer.
Tests/Quizzes
If a student is truant from class, all work for that day will receive a zero, including tests. All work must be shown on test problems to receive credit. If you ask for more time to finish a test, you can come before or after school within two school days of the test. This will be all the time allowed to complete the test. Tests can be retaken within two weeks of the test date. Absences do not extend this time. Keep all corrected work and tests in an organized place until you receive you term report card.
Absent/Late Work
Absent or late work can be turned in up to one week after the assignment is given. This will accommodate normal absences, funerals, school excused absences, etc. Correcting the assignment will be the responsibility of the student. Arrange with me for a time to correct late work. If the student has a concern because of an unusual situation, they can come and talk to me. When the student returns, a fair due date can be negotiated. If the work is not in by that date it will be given an “M” (missing) grade.
A record will be kept of students who waste class time. Work from the wasted time will not be accepted late. Being unprepared may also have the same effect. Students are welcome in class as long as they are on-task and not disruptive.

Extra Credit
There is no extra credit offered. A passing grade will be realized if all the assigned work is completed and turned in on time and master of concepts is demonstrated.

Correcting
Occasionally, students will correct each others’ work. This is a good thing because students can see how a problem might be looked at differently. Also, it can foster class discussion and practice.

Textbooks


Students are responsible for the textbook they are assigned. I cannot take responsibility for books left in the classroom. If the book is damaged, a fine will be assessed in the name of the student assigned the book. Please look over the textbook with your student and evaluate its condition. Any undisclosed damage will be assessed a fine at the end of the year.
